Welcome Visitors!

One of my best friends from college came out to visit with her fiance last week! It was so fun to have them here and show them around! And it was a great excuse to do more of the touristy things that I have yet to experience. Some of the things we did were old favorites of mine - Olvera Street, Grand Central Market, Venice Beach, Santa Monica, In-n-Out, Bricks and Scones. And many others were brand new experiences - Walt Disney Concert Hall, Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral, the Angels Flight, Homegirl Cafe, the Getty, Exposition Park Rose Garden, salsa at Steven's Steakhouse, and the Paramount Pictures studio tour!

I am so fortunate to have such great friends like these! And it's hard to believe that the next time we see each other will be for their wedding!!! CRAZY. Looking forward to it!

The previous week, my parents came out for a visit. It was less about the tourist attractions and more about just getting to know my neighborhood and the team a little better and spending quality time with family. We also drove out to Las Vegas to spend a few days with my grandparents and family out there. I really am blessed to have such awesome parents! I miss them already and can't wait to see them again in July! Sorry... no pics from their visit. We're bad about that.

Winter Quarter 2011 Reflection

We just finished our winter quarter for the Servant Partners internship. Which, crazy enough, means that we have just over a year left of the internship! After each quarter we are encouraged to write a reflection of our experiences. I'm sorry if my reflection sounds that a random rambling of information! But I hope it gives you some insight into my experiences here in L.A. Cheers!
_________________________________________________

At the beginning of this quarter, change was in the air. First, I had a couple of very disappointing developments on the job front, culminating in a rejection from a job that I was really excited about. But within just a couple of days after the rejection, I was offered the opportunity to teach the first and second grade class at Adventures Ahead. The idea of taking the job made me nervous since I didn’t really have much teaching experience. But I felt the Lord’s invitation to trust him and jump in with a posture of learning and growing. Speaking of growing, the weekend following my first week of teaching at Adventures Ahead, I gave my first sermon! Knowing that public speaking is one of my least favorite things in the world, the prospect of giving a sermon felt scary and daunting, even if just to our SP class. But the Lord was so faithful throughout the process. He gave me a topic that I was excited about (the promise for the restoration of his people), he gave me relevant words, and he gave me confidence to speak. While there are plenty of ways that I could improve for the next time I give a sermon, I felt overwhelmed by the ways in which the Lord delivered me through the challenge.

The weekend following my sermon, we went on our first prayer retreat as a class. It was a great time to unplug from the many distractions of life and slow down to be with the Lord. I went into the weekend overwhelmed with anxiety over jobs and money. I wasn’t sure how/what God was going to provide to pair well with my part time commitment at Adventures Ahead and I was beginning to feel the anxiety of monetary provision throughout the next quarter. The Lord was very gracious to me over the weekend in helping me to slow down, calming my mind and speaking encouragement into my situation. After checking my email on Saturday evening, I was overjoyed to learn that I had been offered a part time position at a local coffee shop! It felt like a great compliment to my teaching job and an incredible gift and provision from the Lord. The prayer retreat proved to be an awesome time of fellowship with my team, receiving God’s affirmation as his beloved daughter, coming alongside teammates at the initiation of God’s healing work, and learning to take on a posture of praise and tap into the incredible power of the Holy Spirit in my life.

Just about a week after returning from the prayer retreat and starting my job at the coffee shop, our ministry projects began. I had mixed feelings about being placed with the Friday night cell group kids. First, I wasn’t sure I wanted to be around kids any more than I was already experiencing through Adventures Ahead, and second, if I was going to be around kids, I would have preferred to be with the Spanish service. Despite my reservations, I have been blessed by my involvement with the Friday night group. The kids are really fun, even though I still feel I have so much to learn in regards to loving, connecting with, and disciplining kids. I have been especially excited about getting to know some of the women in the study. At first, I wasn’t really interested in participating in the women’s study, since I didn’t feel like I had the energy to commit to another community, but my sentiments quickly changed once I got to know the lovely women in the group.

Suddenly, looking around, I found it surprising and overwhelming to realize that my life and ministry was being overwhelmed by children! There were all of the students at Adventures Ahead, the dozen or so kids from Friday night cell group, the few kids at Redeemer Fun Zone, and our neighbor kids. I was tempted to panic at the realization. What do I know about kids!? But I continue to be encouraged by God’s love and affirmation for the little children. I feel unqualified, overwhelmed, but honored to work with so many kids! And I feel so excited to learn and grow in my skills and faith through this experience.

At this point, while I feel humbled by God’s grace and provision through my two different jobs, I am also starting to feel very exhausted. Both of my jobs require a huge amount of extrovert energy, of which I have limited amounts. After battling through 2 demanding jobs, I arrive at our SP meetings feeling tired and unable to engage well with my teammates. As the end of the Adventures Ahead semester quickly approaches, I feel the pressure to re-enter the job search. At this point in the internship, it would be a great gift to have one well-paying, steady, full-time, low-key job. I’m looking toward this upcoming job search with anxiety and a lack of motivation. But the Lord has already proved so faithful and able to provide for all of my needs. How quickly I tend to forget his tender care and perfect gifts. I pray that the Lord will give me direction and a good attitude as I embark on this new search.

Under the pressure and fatigue of this current season, several different issues have risen to the surface. I continue to learn how attached I am to security and “my” money. I have a very individualistic view of finances and hate feeling like I have mismanaged my money or cannot sufficiently provide for my needs. And, in a similar vein, I have realized my love of control. I am a hard-core planner. I love mapping out my life – at least the near future – with as much precision as possible. Knowing what to expect and when to expect what relieves a great deal of anxiety and stress for me. I can trace back intense feelings of anxiety all the way to elementary school. I would get butterflies every day before school, wondering what the day might hold for me. Over the last several years, I have seen a huge improvement in my desire to take control of all aspects of my life, but this intense season has shown me that I am still in need of healing in this area. And finally, the theme of community has seemed to come up over and over again this past quarter. I don’t have a blemish free track record from my past of living in community. I especially struggle with harboring my feelings, refusing to bring up conflict in any form, sporadically erupting through passive aggressive actions, resulting in a fracturing of the relationship and a desire to quickly escape. There have been a few small victories in the last few years in this department, but again, there is much ground to yet cover. I have recently been able to confess these sinful tendencies to my current roommates, express some of my feelings, and ask for forgiveness and grace on their part. I was joyfully overwhelmed by their grace and understanding. And just last night, we have agreed to work together in order to grow in this area of our lives (as all three of us are huge conflict avoiders). I am excited and hopeful to grow personally and corporately as we tread the dark and scary waters of conflict resolution. While the prospect of bringing up conflict still causes me to want to crawl into a hole, I am convinced that this growth is vital to my walk with Christ and my survival on whatever ministry team I might find myself in the future.

While there have been a couple of times this quarter when I was incredibly homesick and questioned my decision to move to L.A. and take part in this program, I am encouraged by God’s reaffirmation of my calling. Despite the hardships, the doubts, and the trials, I am confident of the Lord’s leading in my life and I’m hopeful for what he wants to teach me through this program. At times it’s tempting to be overwhelmed by my own sinfulness and shortcomings, but I can also look back and see how God has been challenging my faith, developing my talents, stretching my limits, and causing new and exciting growth. It’s still daunting to think about what I might be doing at the end of this internship, but I feel affirmed by God that I am on the right path. He continues to grow my heart for the poor and the hurting and I feel a renewed call toward Bolivia and/or Latin America. I’m looking forward to the next year of the internship where we will be able to engage more with our own gifts and callings. The mountain of unknowns for the future causes me to cringe, but also fills me with anticipation and hope!

A thing or two about money

Today started out to be a lovely day. I woke up early to go to my Spanish aerobics class, had a really great conversation with one of the women at aerobics, enjoyed a leisurely breakfast and cafecito, skyped with an amazing friend in Bolivia, and then spent a few hours working on various things with a fellow SP intern at her house.

As I got in the car to head over to Keo's house... it dawned on me how silly it was that I was in the car in the first place. It's just a 15 min walk or 5 min bike ride. But since I was already in my car and I had my computer and everything, I decided to start up the engine and head over. I was immediately regretting my decision when I realized that it was street sweeping day and I couldn't find a single parking spot on her entire street. I drove around for a while, kicking myself for being in my car at all when I finally paralleled into a spot a couple blocks from her house.

After a good few hours of work/hang out with Keo, I headed back to my car. I got in, started the engine, and realized there was something posted on my windshield. "What the... Is that a... CRAP!" After all that driving around, I had parked on a Wednesday street sweeping block anyways! When I saw cars on the street I just assumed it wasn't a Wednesday street and neglected to read the sign right in front of me! IDIOT! Now I owe a whopping $68 to the City of Los Angeles for my negligence! I can't even begin to express how upset, frustrated, mad, embarrassed, ashamed, pissed I was about the situation. Maybe it sounds like nothing... $68, who cares? But as I await to see if my two random part time jobs will even cover my basic monthly necessities, every dollar seems like a big deal. $68 is what it costs to buy a tank of gas, $68 is about what I would be tithing each month on my salary, $68 is a week's worth of groceries for me and my two roommates.

I drove the 5 min back to my place, and broke down in tears. So dumb, right? Grr... I wish this didn't sting so bad. And then I immediately went to God with my emotions. Why is this affecting me so badly? How can I get so upset about $68? Why didn't I make the responsible/environmental decision to use alternate transportation? God went on to ask me questions about my own heart and motives. He showed me that every decision I make has an impact on my own well being and the world. He challenged me about my very individualistic view of finances and gently told me that the $68 isn't mine anyways. It's his. All of it is his. I felt humbled and ashamed. But God wrapped me in his grace and encouraged me to lift up my head, forgive myself, and get on with things. Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed with my own sinfulness and continuous failure. But the Lord is good and faithful and never stops forgiving me and picking me back up. Thanks. Please teach me to look outside of myself and to trust you with my life and my money.

It's ironic that we happen to be coming up on some passages on financial issues as we study the gospel of Luke. I'll try to keep you updated as I learn more about finances. I'm praying for a more healthy and communal take on money. And bigger trust in God as my provider.

Update Letter - February 2011

Dear Friends and Supporters, February 13, 2011

Happy New Year! I know… it’s a little late for that and I’m sorry for the delay in communication. Life here in South L.A. has recently gotten very busy and I’m excited to share some exciting news with you! After spending a wonderful Thanksgiving with my family and friends in Colorado, I decided to stay here in L.A. for Christmas. It was really hard to spend my first Christmas away from my parents, but God also met me in the sadness with great friends and new adventures! Two of my teammates and I took a day trip down to San Diego on Christmas. We hit up a particular part of town for an Asian-themed progressive lunch, full of completely new and delicious culinary experiences. Then we walked the coast at La Jolla and visited the seals, ending the night with a delicious Christmas turkey dinner with my roommate Steph and her parents. Then I brought in the New Year with some of my teammates and church friends by hosting a champagne game night and dance party! What a blast!

As I’m sure you are well aware, I had been looking for a job in South L.A. since relocating here in September. I was beginning to get very discouraged and anxious about the future. A couple near job offers left me even more discouraged and frustrated. But I’m happy to inform you that in mid-January the Lord answered my months of prayers in a very unexpected way! The director of an after school program in our neighborhood happens to be a Servant Partners internship alum. She was very suddenly in need of a teacher for the 1st and 2nd grade class. And after receiving disappointing news from a potential employer I decided to consider the teaching job. It was a quick decision, but I felt God’s invitation to trust Him and rely on his strength to grow and teach me through the process. In a matter of days, I stood before my young students. It’s been a daunting and exhausting challenge at times, but one that has stretched my boundaries and caused me to constantly seek Christ for equipping. While working with kids is not something that comes natural to me, I’ve been encouraged recently by God’s Word, which says: “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For he who is least among you all – he is the greatest” (Luke 9:48). I also just began working part time at a cute independent coffee shop for some more income. While the new pace of life is difficult and chaotic at times, I am overjoyed by God’s provision in this season. AND, as of last week, our team is fully employed! Praise God for his extravagant love and provision!

My Classroom at the after-school program

In other news, February 1 marked the start of the ministry project season – a 6-month period of focused ministry and relationship-building in our neighborhood. Our internship team was divided into 4 different teams, partnering with 4 different ministries of our local church – the young adult ministry, the youth group, the children’s ministry of the Spanish service, and childcare/kid’s curriculum for the Friday night cell group. We are coming alongside the Church of the Redeemer in the vision that they have adopted to build a highway of resources and support for the children of our neighborhood, “from cradle to college”. I was assigned, along with teammates Dan and Josh, to the Friday night cell group. We’re still figuring out what this time will look like, but we made our first appearance at the group last night. Please pray for guidance from the Holy Spirit and tremendous love and patience for our time with the kids. It’s funny how my work and ministry seem to currently revolve around kids, since just a few years ago I had very little interest in working with the little ones! I’m excited to see what God will do through this new work.

I am truly grateful for your partnership with me in this season. So much has happened in the last few months, but I seem to have met my one page quota. I’d love to share more stories and pictures with you! Head on over to my blog to read about more exciting news including – giving my first sermon, taking Spanish step aerobics with my neighbors, growing in prayer, and visiting beautiful places in Southern California. Again, thank you for your prayers and your friendship. I pray the Lord’s blessing and protection over your lives!

Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

Much love,
Ali Fraze

Extravagant Provision

In December, 5 on our 12 person team were unemployed. Finances were starting to get tight and anxieties were running high. The "benefits" of unemployment were running out and the boredom was setting in.

In late December, Steph was offered a job with a really cool non-profit organization. Then Denise started a temp job, and then a month long contract in the development group at a really great organization. Then James got a job offer from World Impact - where a few of the other interns work. And then I started at the after school program and coffee shop. THEN just last week, Dan started a job with an engineering company in Long Beach! In just over a month, we went from 5 unemployed team members to ZERO. Praise God for his faithfulness and extravagant provision!

"Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things." Psalm 107:8-9

Just wanted to share the good news! Thanks so much for your prayers!

P.S. - Things are going well at the after school program and coffee shop, but the learning curve is steep and it's been a little tiring to juggle the two jobs and the internship. My brain seems to always be busy. Please pray for an absence of anxiety and a settling in to my new busy life! ALSO - my knees have been rebelling in a big way to the constant on-my-feet lifestyle. Please pray for healing for my knees. It makes me very sad to have to slow down and sit on the sidelines of my active lifestyle. Can you recommend any remedies? What are the best shoes/insoles for a constantly standing lifestyle? Any supplements or exercises that have helped your aching knees? All advice and prayers are welcome! Thanks! :)

Back to my Roots.

Hey there. Thanks so much for the weekend prayers! The prayer retreat was really great! God is doing some cool things on the team, and it's starting to get a little bit easier to discern his voice.

Right before heading off to the prayer retreat I had a job interview at a really cute independent coffee shop! Unfortunately, I hadn't received any news about the job before I had to unplug and head off to the retreat. I found myself a little distracted Friday night and Saturday morning. I finally asked my teammate James if I could use his nifty iphone to check my email real quick for any word on the job. I frantically signed in and scrolled down my inbox. There it is! "Welcome to the team" was the subject line! Woohoo!!! A job! I did a little happy dance right there... and it was fun to be with the whole team at dinner when I got the news! Praise the Lord! And then I clumsily made a quick reply to accept the job while my dinner got cold. But who cares about dinner... I got a job!

So yeah, I started at the coffee shop on Tuesday. It's going well. The people are really nice, it seems to stay pretty busy, and it's SO cute! I still have a lot to learn as far as all of their systems and procedures, but I'm getting there. The shop is family owned - started by a Korean mom and daughter (my age). The daughter is acting as the store manager now. It's located in a pretty snazzy part of town, somewhat close to Hollywood. I've already heard all kinds of conversations between people about work in "the industry". But I haven't seen any famous people yet. I'll let you know if anyone big pops in!

Just wanted to share the news! I feel very blessed. It's fun to be back to the coffee shop culture! The job is a great compliment to my part time teaching gig at the after school program. And now it's fun to look back at all of the closed doors, frustrations, and waiting over the last several months and praise God for his perfect plan and perfect timing. And I'm so glad that I didn't have to cross over to the dark side... (Sbucks). ;)

Prayer Retreat

This weekend (January 28-30) all of the Servant Partners interns will be off on a prayer retreat. It's our last push for resting and connecting to God before the ministry projects begin. Irony aside, I would greatly appreciate it if you would pray for our time of prayer. Please pray for:
  • Open ears to hear what God is saying to us
  • Healing of our fears and insecurities
  • Gifts of peace, strength and whatever else we need for the months ahead
Details are still sparse on the upcoming ministry projects, but when I have more specifics, I'll definitely be sure to let you know!
